What is the subjunctive?

Introduction

The short answer

In Spanish, most sentences use the indicativo — the default mood for facts, statements, and questions. The subjuntivo is a different mood used to express wishes, emotions, influence, and doubt. It almost always appears in a second verb, after que.

Sé que viene. (indicativo — I know it's a fact)

Quiero que venga. (subjuntivo — I want it to happen)

Good news for beginners

You don't need to understand every use of the subjunctive at A2–B1. You just need to recognise the main triggers and learn the most common forms. That's exactly what this ebook covers.

2

The 4 main triggers

Core grammar

The subjunctive is triggered by specific types of verbs and expressions in the main clause. At A2–B1, there are 4 key categories to know:

Trigger 1

Deseo o voluntad

Wish or wanting
Quiero que vengas.
I want you to come.
querer · desear · esperar · necesitar
Trigger 2

Emoción

Feelings and reactions
Me alegra que estés aquí.
I'm glad you're here.
alegrarse · tener miedo · sorprender · odiar
Trigger 3

Influencia

Telling someone to do something
El médico recomienda que descanses.
The doctor recommends you rest.
recomendar · pedir · decir · prohibir
Trigger 4

Expresiones impersonales

Impersonal expressions
Es importante que estudies.
It's important that you study.
es importante · es necesario · es mejor
The formula: verb 1 (indicativo) + que + verb 2 (subjuntivo)
3

The two-subject rule

Key rule

This is the most important rule at beginner level. The subjunctive only appears when there are two different people — one person wanting or feeling something, and a different person doing something. When it's the same person, use the infinitive.

Two different people
Yo
quiero...
que
vengas
Quiero que tú vengas.
I want you to come.
2 people → que + subjuntivo
vs
Same person
Yo
quiero...
same person ↩
Yo
venir
Quiero venir.
I want to come.
1 person → infinitivo

Quick test

Ask yourself: Who is doing the wanting? and Who is doing the action? If the answers are different people — use que + subjuntivo. If it's the same person — use the infinitivo.

More examples

Espero que ella llame. — she calls, not me → subjuntivo
Espero llamar mañana. — I call → infinitivo
Prefiero que él conduzca. — he drives, not me → subjuntivo
Necesito descansar. — I rest → infinitivo

Irregular stems carry over from the present indicative to the subjunctive.

Irregular verbs

Forms

These 5 verbs must be memorised — they don't follow the regular pattern at all. They appear constantly in real Spanish, so it's worth learning them early.
